Updates and Rollups

Microsoft Dynamics 365 updates and rollups deliver new features, improvements and known issue resolutions and are an important part of maintaining your system. Update and Rollup installation can be handled at many levels in the organization, from IT staff managing installation at the server level to users installing an update rollup on their Outlook clients. How your company manages the delivery of updates will be determined by the resources available.  This chapter will discuss process of delivering updates to the various components of Dynamics 365 as well as some items to consider before applying updates.

Service updates versus update rollups

It can be confusing to understand the difference between service updates and update rollups.  Service updates are generally distributed quarterly and introduce new features. For instance, the December 2016 Update for Dynamics 365 introduced business apps, the ability to create Learning Path content, editable grids, and many more features and enhancements. These features are not available to systems that have not applied the December 2016 Update for Dynamics 365.

Update rollups are released more frequently, typically every eight weeks, and address problems discovered in the application.

Service updates are released within update rollups.

Updating to a new release

Updating to a new release of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Server requires an upgrade.

Removing an update rollup

Some update rollups can be uninstalled while others cannot.

Use the Programs and Features applet of the Control Panel to uninstall Update Rollups that support it.

If you must remove an update rollup that does not support an uninstall, you will need to restore the database backups of MSCRM_CONFIG and your organization databases that were performed prior to running the update rollups.

Online updates and schedule

Customers who are running Dynamics 365 Online are automatically upgraded to the newest Update Rollup, and Microsoft releases these updates on a rolling eight week schedule.  It is best practice to verify the version of Dynamics 365 being used by following the steps laid out in this chapter.  Many times, customizations made are affected by certain versions of Update Rollup.

For instance, Update Rollup 12 brought a new Forms user interface designed to work smoothly with Windows 8 mobile technology.  Unless the user was running the classic version of the user interface, instances of JavaScript no longer worked, affecting functionality for the end-user.
